Common Ailments - Elbow

Tendonitis (Golfers Elbow/Tennis Elbow):

Background:

Tendons are the strong attachment of the muscles to the bones that they move.  The two most common tendonitis’ that occur in the elbow are called Golfers elbow and Tennis elbow, each one is primarily due to overuse activities that eventually lead to damage in the tendon involved.

Golfers elbow:  This condition is characterized by pain located on the inside of the elbow and can be associated with minor swelling and localized tenderness to palpation of the inside of the elbow.  Someone suffering from Golfers elbow will usually relate a weekend of doing an activity they are unfamiliar with that puts an excessive amount of strain on the inside of the elbow.

Tennis elbow:  This is a condition characterized by pain located on the outside of the elbow and can be associated with minor swelling and localized tenderness to palpation of the outside of the elbow.  Someone suffering from Tennis elbow will most often relate a history of doing an activity that they are unfamiliar with that puts and excessive amount of strain on the outside of the elbow.

Treatment:

Both of the tendonitis’, along with other less common tendonitis’, respond well to conservative Chiropractic care.  If you or someone you know is needlessly suffering from pain in the elbow due to tendonitis, come into Absolute Healthcare Chiropractic and have Dr. Gerwig develop a customized treatment protocol, without the use of drugs or surgery, and be on the road to living pain free today!

Elbow Sprain/Strain:

Background:

The difference between a Sprain and a sprain is that a sprain involves the ligaments and a strain involves the muscles.  They most often accompany each other and can occur as the result of a traumatic accident or from and overuse/repetitive motion injury.

Signs and Symptoms:

Someone suffering from a Sprain or a Strain around the elbow will report pain immediately following a particular activity.  There is usually associate swelling and the involved ligaments or muscles will be tender to palpation.  Following the injury any activity that involves using the damaged ligament or muscle will be extremely painful and resistance activities that involve the tissues are also acutely painful.  The most common way to injure these muscles and ligaments is by overloading the elbow joint and either forcing it beyond it’s normal range of motion, or exceeding the strength of the ligaments and tendons that are being loaded.

Treatment:

Conservative Chiropractic care can be extremely effective in healing the initial injury and by undergoing proper rehabilitation to prevent injury in the future.  If you or someone you know is needlessly suffering from elbow pain due to a Sprain of the ligaments or a strain of the muscles, come into Absolute Healthcare Chiropractic and have Dr. Gerwig develop a customized treatment protocol, without the use of drugs or surgery, and be on the road to living pain free today!

Impingement Syndromes:

Background:

There are numerous nerves that traverse the elbow and even more places that these nerves can be compressed as they pass over, under and around the muscles, ligaments, veins, arteries and bones.  Pinching of any of the nerves around the elbow is going to most often create numbness and pain between the elbow and wrist and can extend into the hand.  Impingement syndromes are often mistaken for carpal tunnel syndrome so proper diagnosis is critical.

Signs and Symptoms:

Someone suffering form impingement around the elbow may report pain and associated weakness and “clumsiness’ when using the hands.  The distribution of the symptoms (the numbness, pain, weakness, tingling) depends on exactly what nerve is compressed and exactly where the impingement occurs.  The injury occurs most often as a result of overuse of the forearm musculature such as occurs while using a screwdriver (construction worker) or scissors (hairdresser) repetitively.

Treatment:

The most important thing to determine when developing a proper treatment is where the impingement is occurring.  A comprehensive examination can often expose the area of concern, but often times a Nerve Conduction Velocity test is needed to find the exact location of the impingement.  Impingement syndromes around the elbow respond very well to conservative Chiropractic care.  If you or someone you know about is needlessly suffering form an impingement syndrome around the elbow, come into Absolute Healthcare Chiropractic and have Dr. Gerwig design a customized treatment protocol, without the use of drugs or surgery, and be on the road to living pain free today!

Little Leaguers Elbow:

Background:

Little Leaguers elbow is a condition that is seen most often in young males that are playing little league baseball and are pitchers.  The injury is due to a combination of the youth pitching with faulty biomechanics that put too much strain on the medial collateral ligament of the elbow (the ligament that attaches to upper and lower arm at the inside of the elbow) combined with the youth pitching too many innings.  The ligaments of the youth can hold up to the repeated strain, but the area that the ligament attaches to the bone starts to detach and a condition similar to Osgood schlaters disease of the knee occurs on the inside of the elbow.

Signs and Symptoms:

Someone suffering from Little Leaguers elbow will complain of pain and swelling on the inside of the elbow that came on after pitching for an extended period of time.  Since the initial injury any attempt at throwing a pitch will reproduce the pain and swelling.

Treatment:

Diagnostic imaging (x-rays or MRI) is needed to determine the extent of the damage.  In cases where the bone is still attached treatment with conservative Chiropractic care can produce great results with elimination of the pain along with rehabilitation and education that will allow the youth athlete return to the sport.  If you or someone you know is suffering from elbow pain due to little leaguers elbow, come into Absolute Healthcare Chiropractic and have Dr. Gerwig develop a customized treatment protocol, without the use of drugs or surgery, that will get you out of pain and back on the field as soon as possible.

Bursitis:

Background:

Bursa are fluid filled sacs that are located between tendons, muscles, ligaments and bones and they are designed to reduce the stress that can normally be found in areas that undergo a lot of friction.  Normally the bursa are very strong and durable but in situations of repetitive trauma or overuse the bursa can experience micro tears.  These tears can accumulate to the point that the bursa will become damaged and will no longer act as the friction reducer and will begin to create pain.  There are a number of bursa in and around the elbow joint and the particular symptoms will vary depending on the location of the injury.

Signs and Symptoms:

Someone suffering from bursitis will experience pain during a particular activity that gets worse the more they do the activity.  There may be associated swelling and the involved bursa are tender to palpation.  Often times the bursitis will be accompanied by tendonitis of the muscles that the bursa is between.

Treatment:

Bursitis has been found to respond very well to conservative Chiropractic care.  If you or someone you know is needlessly suffering from elbow pain due to bursitis come into Absolute Healthcare Chiropractic and have Dr. Gerwig design a customized treatment protocol, without the use of drugs or surgery, that will get you on the road to living pain free today!
